It’s been a revitalizing 7 days since Ragnar. They included lots of rest, relaxation, and just taking it easy. For the record, I didn’t do any formal “training” for Ragnar, I just ran a little bit more to make sure I wouldn’t die on the race course. Mission accomplished. I knew I was going to be pretty exhausted after the weekend, running longer than I ever have and minimal sleep will do that to ya! So I embraced 7 days following Ragnar as Ragnar Recovery Week.
Immediately after i finished my last leg of Ragnar I was already feeling the fatigue and muscle soreness creep on. Luckily there was plenty of wine & beer post-race so that helped a bit, but on Sunday (after sleeping like a rock) I woke up and moving was a bit challenging. Going down stairs? I definitely winced a time or two! It was rough. That same day I left San Fran to head down to San Luis Obispo to visit my sister. First up on this week of doing my body good was some Iced Coffee with pumpkin spice syrup….
….oh-so good. I have tried to hold out on the pumpkin-spiced craze until Santa Barbara’s weather cools down a bit, but I just can’t resist iced coffee! This monstrous coffee was so refreshing and I definitely needed the caffeine to make it to SLO safely!
One I got to SLO, the compression sock party began! I picked up my first pair at the race and obviously I chose the ones with the Ragnar logo. I am definitely a fan so far, they really seems to speed up muscle recovery. Also I’ve been doing a lot of legs-up-on-the-wall stretching. It just feels so good!
This week also consisted of a food fest! I always get delayed hunger after running so between that and sleep deprivation I have been stuffing my face in attempts to satisfy my Runger. Smoothies and eggs have been my go-to meals. And for some reason A LOT of pizza this week?! Oh, well.
Between work and just milling about Santa Barbara I have been walking TONS. I got hooked on walking as a replacement to formal exercise after surgery and love going on a long walk when I’m just not feeling the whole gym/run/swim thing. Two days post-Ragnar I started doing some gentle exercise in the form of yoga and I went for one swim which felt awesome, but haven’t tried to run yet. My calves are still a little tight so for the time being I think I shall just stick to swimming and yoga.
